Skelp is a high energy indie rock band that doesn’t slow down for anything on their new album entitled, Volume. The band formed in the mid 1990’s and hails from Washington D.C.
The album starts out with, “Sophie’s Dance,” a fast tempo song even when compared to the rest of the disc’s songs. The instruments all do a spectacular job at maintaining the same pace throughout the song. If not for that, the song would sound very amateur. The drums and guitar both are showcased a great deal on the track. Both are played sharp and clear with great consonance between the two.
The guitar is heard even better on, “The Girls Are Gone Now,” while the drums take more of a backseat. It comes through very sharp once again and while played hard, leaves a bigger impact on the listener. There is also a “woohoohoo” vocal sound off heard as the track is repeated a few more times throughout the duration of the song. Also, the band’s high energy, fast paced sound is featured again.
“Oil to Blood,” has even harder chords to match the amazingly quick tempo that is used throughout the entire album. Once again, the instruments and vocals all keep up with one another. This allows for a nice smooth, fully on key song and proves that the group is more than a garage band.
Skelp has put their high energy, highly developed musical talent, and fast paced indie rock sound into Volume to make for quite the impressive album. The high-speed tempo featured on every song is done in such a way that does not allow it to become stale. The title Volume is appropriate because listeners will be turning up the volume on their stereos; this is truly an awesome album to be played loud.
