Andrew Taylor's Mohribold is a neat addition to the New Age repertoire. The music is pleasant on the ears without ever being boring. Melody and harmony interweave in often minimalist fashion to the beat of varied world percussion instruments. He also adds in a little something that helps this music stand out from the pack... electric guitar. But this he does just occasionally, when it fits, so as to not undermine the overall acoustic/world music feel of the album. (You might say the same about the judicious use of keyboards on the CD).
Taylor is yet another remarkable artist who plays nearly every instrument on the recording, which consists of more non-electronic instrumentation than anything else. I suppose we can forgive him for not having mastered bassoon, trumpet and cello (he has guests play these) when he plays the flute, various percussion, guitar, keyboards and more quite well!
This really is something a little bit different. If you've already purchased all of the stock New Age recordings from your local nature and/or record stores, and you hunger for something along the same lines but more engaging, then here it is. Mohribold is a fascinating experiment in merging many differing sounds into a beautiful whole that is well worth your dime.
