Robert Becker’s sophomore album Evening Optimist is a grand success by a talented musician. Authentic, varied and well-produced, Evening Optimist is pleasantly surprising at each turn. Formerly of Austin-based band Sunflower, Becker brings an emotionally aware, gentle sound to his particular brand of rock.
The album begins with “Drifting”, overwhelmingly electronic and featuring Becker’s voice with high reverb. The listener’s first impression is that perhaps Becker’s voice would be better suited to R&B, perhaps he is trying too hard. But as the track continues, and as the listener is exposed to the sheer variety and versatility that Becker offers throughout the album, the listener rethinks the original judgment – the music is well-thought out, Becker’s voice appropriate and well-placed.
The second track, “Nursery Rhyme”, is eerily reminiscent of Scott Matthews’ “Eyes Are Wider Than Before”, another well-composed song by a talented singer-songwriter. Layered vocals, creative drumming, and steady guitar sounds create a well-blended, adequately post-processed musical piece. Juxtaposed beautifully with this sound is “A Message”, intentionally and romantically lo-fi. The track slowly flows into the standard sound of the album again, with bright and uplifting notes. Tracks like “Alone is a Dream” and “Different View” are softer, gentler, and showcase Becker’s versatility well.
Becker’s album ends on a haunting note, with exotic Eastern melodic themes and breathy vocals. “Grow Fake” and “Close to Describe” are both winners and show off Becker at his best.
Overall, the entire album is a grand success by a talented and creative artist. Blending musicianship, production, and lateral thinking, Becker has created a work of art in Evening Optimist.
