Tommy Peltier has a unique voice and sings out what is naturally flowing through him. He has been in the music community for many years and has experience in several areas from songwriting to playing multiple instruments and now adding singing to the list. The first solo album for Tommy Peltier, Love, Women and Song, is a fundamental starting point.
On first listen, the album comes off as uninspiring; the music is decent but the vocals are nothing special. Peltier has a good voice but it isn’t showcased in most songs. Love, Women and Song could be divided into two different albums. The division is clearly shown with the first half of the tracks containing lyrics and the second half all instrumentals. The singing varies from song to song, at times high-pitched, others low and slow. The instrumentals are creative but some have peculiar, ill-timed pauses.
After a few more listens the album grows on you and a couple of songs earn a replay.
The theme of love is consistent throughout the lyrical tracks. “The One and Only” is a nice opening track; Peltier doesn’t push his voice too much and the vocals flow along with the music. “Robie Sweet Dreams” is another notable song, the music is upbeat and the electronic sounds are enjoyable. On second listen, the instrumental tracks sound more like scores for a movie, the peculiar, ill-timed pauses would make sense when put to the scene in a movie or act.
Although the vocals may need to be polished and expanded, Love, Women and Song is worth having a listen to. It’s a quirky and eclectic album composed of a mix of genres. Tommy Peltier is willing to push boundaries and try new things. An 80’s party might be one of the best places to listen to Love, Women and Song or for those days when you’re not quite sure what you want to listen to.
