Voodoo Circle is comprised of Alex Beyrodt (guitars), David Readman (vocals), Mat Sinner (bass), Markus Kullman (drums), and Jimmy Kresic (keyboards). Three of the five have long hair to complete their heavy rock/metal persona. They’ve been said to sound like Whitesnake, Rainbow, and Deep Purple, but I lean towards more of a Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath sound. Although, there are surely sounds of all these greats tucked within their sophomore release, Broken Heart Syndrome.
Stylistically, the songs that make up this album follow the tried but true hard rock ways: rolling drum patterns, hard guitar licks, and dark keys. While not at all stale, there’s something holding the album back from being completely fresh. The band has some tough competition, and those would be the contenders of the 70’s bands who so greatly owned this genre. It’s hard to compete with groups from more than three decades ago, but Voodoo Circle still does it well. The tracks sound crisp, clean cut and well produced. The guitar work is fantastic, as it should be with a hard rock/metal sound, and Readman’s vocals stay consistent within the realms of the genre’s sound: slightly wailing, but powerfully strong, and falsetto at times.
Broken Heart Syndrome is chockfull of hard rock ballads. Without even listening, you can already have a pretty good idea of what it sounds like. These songs could be on a new Guitar Hero release (if they hadn’t stopped that franchise) for fans to rock out to in their own homes. If you’re in the mood for a rocking good time, replete with potent vocals, hard hitting drums, and electrifying guitar solos, pick up Voodoo Circle’s newest. If nothing else, it will be a nostalgic trip to a greater time of music.
