As a former music director I can tell you that in a choral setting one of the things a director is most concerned with (and one of the things most challenging to achieve) is a beautiful blend of voices. Amikaeyla and Trelawny Rose have it, and clearly have been doing this kind of music together for a long time. Their singing is the highlight of every song and fans of vocal jazz as well as adult contemporary music should pay attention. This is all the more notable considering that these are all live recordings.
Album's like To Eva With Love, which consist mainly of cover tunes, often fall into the pitfall of just being imitations of the original. Not so here! The Roses have made each song uniquely their own and the arrangements are very engaging.
Now there is one 'unique' aspect of the music that does seem a bit odd to the ear. Often, when it comes time for instrumental interludes between the wonderful singing, there suddenly is a trombone solo. The player is a good trombonist, and the playing very tasteful, but sometimes in certain places it just fits rather strangely into the whole. Please don't let this keep you from checking out this CD, though, because overall it's a wonderful collection of music. At times, in fact, it is truly fantastic. “Over the Rainbow” alone is worth the cost of the album.
If you are bored with cookie-cutter music and like it to be harmonious and tuneful, then this one is right up your alley. Don't miss out!
