MonkeyJunk - To Behold
July 18th, 2011

Ottawa is not a place that comes to the front of one’s mind when thinking about the blues, but Canada trio MonkeyJunk are about to change that. Taking their name from a remake by Son House, MonkeyJunk has already made a name for themselves in their native Canada by being nominated for best new artist at the Maple Blues Awards. Releasing their first album in 2009, the guys are back with their latest release, To Behold.

They say that first impressions are everything and this can be applied to the opening song of an album. The opening of MonkeyJunk’s To Behold makes a wonderful impression on listeners. “Mother’s Crying” is a great song that gets the toes tapping, while being accompanied by some impressive vocals, despite the less than upbeat content of the lyrics. Following the opening is a cover of Hank Williams “You’re Gonna Change (Or I’m Gonna Leave)” and the funky original “Right Now.”

“Let Her Down” slows down the tempo to let the passion in the vocals really be heard. There is much feeling in this song and the music adds to it appropriately. “With These Hands” is a typical love song with a sweet guitar solo. “You Don’t Know” is agood rocking song that will have you singing and jamming along with it. “While You Are Mine” is a somber song about a difficult relationship.  It is heartfelt and moody, which is displayed superbly by the instrumental parts of the song.

The romantic theme of the album continues with “Running in the Rain.” No need to get down though, because it’s a catchy song with an upbeat melody. “All About You” is another sweet romantic song to follow up the previous one. “The Marrinator” is an instrumental that finishes off the album. It is a great song that really showcases MonkeyJunk’s musical abilities. Sometimes words are not needed because the music can speak for itself.

MonkeyJunk’s To Behold is a very good album that would be a nice addition to anyone’s musical library. Blues fans rejoice. Even if you are not a fan of the genre, check it out and expand your musical horizons. These guys have so much talent and To Behold is worth the time you’ll spend listening.
