Rebecca Hosking is not only a talented songwriter and painter, she sure has some fantastc windpipes. The Nashville, Tennessee native is keeping herself well rounded by lending her talents to TV and movie splices, as well as various writing gigs at Examiner.com and most recently, MuzikReviews.com itself.
Her newest release, My Mother’s Child, has a few upbeat, swinging numbers, but mostly consists of slower, more dramatic ballads. “Back to Texas” is pure, straightforward country with the twang and longing to return to the Lone Star State. “Long Distance Love Affair” is a frolicking track in which the keys assist; it’s a playful song which masks the fact the lyrics can be more serious in nature at a closer listen.
“Lonely Together” conveys sadness from the first few seconds of the song. The music and words work together perfectly and actually leave you feeling lonely. This song is very powerful. The album’s title track tells the story of Hosking growing up and all the different things she tried and explored. It’s a nice, heartfelt homage to her mother.
While Hosking has an obviously great voice, sometimes it was a little tough to extract much emotion behind the well-written lyrics. Whereas some artists truly conduct the feelings through their words, I felt there was a little bit of a disconnect between Hosking and hers. If you’re looking for deep, meaningful lyrics, and a nice way to spend a relaxing Sunday afternoon though, pop in My Mother’s Child. You won’t be disappointed.
