Heavy metal heavyweights Megadeth are back with their 12th album Endgame. It debuted at the number nine position on the Billboard 200 with 45,000 copies sold in the first week.
Megadeth stuck to their roots of heavy thrash sound on this one. The album mixes up a lot of hard-hitting guitar and drum solos. Lead man Dave Mustaine chants his angry and political driven lyrics over the pulsating instrumentals.
Along with their first single, “Head Crusher”, other strong songs include the opening two songs. “Dialectic Chaos” sets the stage for the rest of the way with great guitar riffs from Mustaine and other lead guitarist Chris Broderick. This song also leads nicely into the riot starting “This Day We Fight!”.
Other songs that standout on this LP are “Bite The Hand” which calls out Wall Street on how they deceived us. Another politically driven track is the title track “Endgame”. The track calls out a President on a secret bill and also questions the Patriot Act. Mustaine also relates to people and their struggles with the economy in “The Right To Go Insane”. Finally, “The Hardest Part Of Letting Go…Sealed With A Kiss” is a love ballad that starts off with light acoustic touch and picks up to a power jam.
Endgame is a good mix of political and personal issues. It also possesses a good combination of thrash tempos that will make you head bang and question society. Mustaine voice doesn’t seem to change much throughout the album. This could be seen as a flaw, but his voice is effective throughout. This album should go down as one of their best works in recent years, which only adds to Megadeth’s celebrated history.
