Saxophonist Benny Reid follows up his 2007 debut, Findings with an uplifting collection of modern jazz pieces. Armed with nine original tracks and an inspired arrangement of Pat Metheny’s “Always and Forever,” the alto saxophonist and band leader continues his musical journey and continues to finds his voice with his latest record, Escaping Shadows.

"The Most Beautiful Girl I Ever Knew," is a testament to Reid’s sister who passed away when he was only 13. The track is particularly striking, with its slow cadence and soft percussion and piano accompaniment.  Elsewhere, Reid conjures up a typical modern jazz landscape on “Sleeping Beauty” with Jeff Taylor’s warm vocalizations and quick percussion beat assisted by electric guitar influences.

The first piece from Escaping Shadows, “The Final Chapter” is a pretty combination of lively percussion and Reid’s bright saxophone playing at its forefront, which is then partnered with Taylor’s rising vocalizations on the last half of the track. Similarly, “Cutting” brings a mélange of lively sounds to the forefront with Taylor continuing to provide effervescent vocalizations against drum-like percussion elements and Reid’s bold saxophone insertions.

Reid slows down on “Facing The Edge” where the saxophone and electric guitar intermingle in creating a determined and rather somber sound. “New Days” follows suit with its own slow candor, but increases percussion and piano elements for a warmer sound that continues the progression of the album from its half way point.

Reid continues his quest in creating the most beautiful collection of jazz pieces on “Firelight” with its aching electric guitar playing that gives way to a regimental percussion beat. Similarly, Reid’s cover of “Always And Forever” is a smoldering piece with the artist’s saxophone taking center stage against soft piano playing. Overall, Escaping Shadows is another confident installation of modern jazz from the young saxophonist, who has a promising career ahead of him, considering his pursuit in pushing his artistry with his own blend of influences and inspired compositions.
